Suzuki Jimny (4th Gen)
3-Door & 5-Door
"The giant-killer — a genuine ladder-frame 4x4 at the cheapest price of entry."
About the Suzuki Jimny (4th Gen)
The fourth-generation Jimny turned a cult off-roader into a South African phenomenon. Launched here on 2 November 2018, the 3-door JB74 pairs a ladder-frame chassis, rigid axles front and rear, and AllGrip Pro part-time 4WD with low range — real off-road hardware in a sub-1.2-tonne body. The longer-wheelbase 5-door JC74 followed in November 2023, adding a usable back seat and boot without losing the formula. One engine across the range: the 1.5L K15B petrol (75 kW / 130 Nm), with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto. Chronic supply shortages and multi-year waiting lists have kept used values unusually firm — a 2019 SA Car of the Year (Lifestyle Utility) and World Urban Car that holds its money like little else in its class.
Who It's For
Lifestyle and weekend adventurers, urban first- or second-car buyers who value a compact footprint and strong residuals, and entry-level off-roaders for whom the Jimny is the affordable gateway into 4x4ing.
Pros & Cons
Strengths
- Genuine ladder-frame 4x4 with low range — not a soft-roader
- Cheapest way into a real off-roader, new or used
- Light weight = surprising capability and easy parts/running costs
- Compact and easy to park during the week, capable on the weekend
- Exceptionally strong resale thanks to chronic supply shortage
- Huge, active SA community (Jimny Gathering, clubs, training)
- 5-door adds real practicality without killing the formula
Weaknesses
- Only 75 kW — modest power, works hard on the highway
- Skittish/wandery at speed; short wheelbase trades stability for agility
- Small 3-door boot (85L behind the seats)
- 3-star Euro NCAP (2018) — basic active safety on lower trims
- New-car waiting lists and occasional dealer markups
Buying Tips
- 1 Confirm it is the 1.5 (4th-gen) and not the older 1.3 — they are different cars
- 2 5-door (2023+) commands a clear premium over the 3-door
- 3 GLX holds value best and adds the safety/infotainment tech buyers want
- 4 Check underbody, skid plates and suspension for hard off-road abuse
- 5 Full Suzuki service history protects resale on an already-firm market
Common Issues to Check
- Dust ingress and interior rattles / tinny NVH
- Crank angle sensor faults on some examples
- Suspension bushing and shock wear from off-road use
- Steering vibration — check for the well-known wobble at speed
- 4-speed auto can run warm under sustained load
